Health tips for spring

For many of us spring is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts which can motivate us to make changes in our lives. As colder weather subsides and warmer days creep up on us, there’s no better time to focus on the health of our body and mind.

So, if you want to rejuvenate your life, but you need a little help in the spring-cleaning department, look no further. Here are 5 of our very best healthy tips for spring.

1. Eat healthy foods

Getting the right balance of nutrients in your diet is essential for maintaining a healthy body. By avoiding processed foods, reducing your sugar intake and scaling down on portion sizes, you can easily improve your nutrition.

And with the abundance of fruit and veg that comes into season during the spring months, you can really take advantage and ensure that you’re getting plenty of fresh and healthy goodness with every meal.

Top tip: Try to incorporate one or two different coloured foods into your snacks, and three or more colours into each meal. We recommend scrambled egg with spinach and peppers, and blueberries and blackberries in yoghurt and granola. Not only will your tastebuds appreciate it, but your insides will too.

2. Stay hydrated

We cannot stress enough how important it is to drink enough water every day. Not only does it regulate your body temperature, prevent infections, keep your organs functioning properly and keep your joints lubricated, but it also improves mood, cognition and sleep quality.

And after reading all this – how often do you manage to drink the recommended daily amount of 6-8 glasses? If you’re not much of a water drinker, you can take things up a notch and add a squeeze of lemon or lime for a touch of zest. Paired with some ice cubes, if that doesn’t scream spring, we don’t know what does.

3. Enjoy a healthy dose of sun

It’s no secret that when the sun comes out, everyone feels a little happier. Sunlight actually boosts the serotonin levels in your brain, helping you to feel calmer, more focused and positive, and providing you with more energy.

When spring comes, it’s a little glimpse of the warmer days to come – the barbeques on the beach, the evening swims, the lazy Sundays in the garden. Everyday moments create the happiest memories.

But while a healthy dose of vitamin D is good for the body and soul, it’s so important you don’t overdo it. Too much sunlight can cause UV rays to permeate your skin’s inner layers which can cause some real damage.

Spring typically provides the perfect amount of sunlight – it’s not too cold and it’s not too hot.

4. Exercise

Take advantage of your spare time and the pleasant weather and reassess your attitude towards fitness and exercise.

Exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle, as it prevents health problems, boosts energy levels, builds strength and reduces stress. It also releases endorphins, and let’s face it – we all love a dose of those ‘feel-good’ chemicals.

So, rather than dreading going for a jog, think of exercise as a fun activity rather than a chore. If you want to start jogging, we love the Couch to 5K app as a gentle way to get started.

It’s easier to make exercise part of your routine if you choose something you enjoy. When you were at school did you like swimming, cycling or dancing, for example?

5. Nurture your sleep routine

Whether it’s mid-week or the weekend, you should always try to maintain a consistent sleep routine. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7-9 hours a night, with an advised bedtime of between 10 and 11 pm.

Naturally, sleep is essential for our bodies, as it allows both the mind and body to recharge. When you get enough sleep, you feel alert and refreshed when you wake up, ready to conquer whatever the day holds.

As the sun sets later and the sun rises earlier in spring, why not go to bed earlier so you can enjoy the freshness of the morning? From tweeting birds to the smell of freshly cut grass, a morning stroll after a good night’s sleep is a natural remedy like no other.
